Preferences: Connection

Connection Preferences determine the assumptions RealOne Player makes about your connection to the Internet. If set properly at installation, the defaults are usually sufficient. Changning these settings should only be done with care or when instructed to do so.

Field

Description

Bandwidth

(Default is set during installation) RealOne Player automatically selects which bandwidth to use when delivering content content over the Internet.

The Normal setting is initially determined by the answers you give during installation. Adjust this setting for best performance. For example, if you have a 56.6K modem but your connection is routinely only 30Kbps, you should probably set this to 28.8Kbps. If this setting is too high you will experience poor playback and extended buffering as the RealOne Player attempts to play clips at bit-rates greater than your connection can handle.

The Maximum setting defines the upper limit for streams that RealOne Player should “upshift” to, using SureStream. This should be set below your best possible connection speed.

Network time-out

(Default is 20 sec. for Connection and 90 sec. for Server) These settings determine how long RealOne Player will either try a particular transport protocol (Connection), or how long it will try to connect to a server (Server). If either time is exceeded, your Player will tell you it cannot connect or that it has lost its connection (to the ISP).

Online Status

Select Automatically detect... or Assume I am online.

Most of RealOne Player's functions require access to the Internet. RealOne Player can detect when you are using a dial-up modem to access the Internet and performs it's functions accordingly. If you are using a network connection, you can let the RealOne Player assume you are online all the time.

Note:

If you have both a modem and a network connection to the Internet (as many laptops do), and you are using the network connection, select "Assume I am online" to simplify the online status detection.
